Alice

I put up a photo of Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter last week and so far got 18 different emails mostly favoring the old version of Alice in Wonderland. The above I think was originally a postcard, looks like you can barely make out a stamp, lower left. Well anyway, thanks to all who thought of sending the Alice stuff. I really can't post them all on this blog but enjoyed reading and seeing everything that came my way. I still can't wait to see the new Disney version in March, 2010. And thanks to Jules for the above image. It is how most of us remember Alice in Wonderland.

Sunday Morning

Water is a great teacher that shows us how to move through the world with grace, ease, determination, and humility. When a river breaks at a waterfall, it gains energy and moves on, as we encounter our own waterfalls, we may fall hard but we always keep moving on. Water can inspire us to not become rigid with fear or cling to what's familiar. Water is brave and does not waste time clinging to its past, but flows onward without looking back. At the same time, when there is a hole to be filled, water does not run away from it in fear of the dark; instead, water humbly and bravely fills the empty space.

Directed by creative mastermind Tim Burton, Disney's new version of "Alice in Wonderland" promises to please the eye, taking Lewis Carroll's 1865 classic, "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," to a new 3-D level, featuring both live-action and CGI characters. While the film is not set to premiere until early 2010, here is a first look at some of the spectacular characters and set designs.

Bill Would Decriminalize Pot

A controversial law in Massachusetts could go national if Congressman Barney Frank gets his way. Frank has filed a bill that would eliminate federal penalties for personal possession of less than 100 grams of marijuana. It would also make the penalty for using marijuana in public just $100. "I think John Stuart Mill had it right in the 1850s," said Congressman Frank, "when he argued that individuals should have the right to do what they want in private, so long as they don't hurt anyone else. It's a matter of personal liberty. Moreover, our courts are already stressed and our prisons are over-crowded. We don't need to spend our scarce resources prosecuting people who are doing no harm to others."

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Ed McMahon, the loyal "Tonight Show" sidekick who bolstered boss Johnny Carson with guffaws and a resounding "H-e-e-e-e-e-ere's Johnny!" for 30 years, has died at a Los Angeles hospital. He was 86.

Publicist Howard Bragman says McMahon died early Tuesday at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center surrounded by his family.

Bragman didn't give a cause of death, saying only that McMahon had a "multitude of health problems the last few months."

Cool Idea

Pathetic . . . California's Salton Sea

I couldn't believe this story when I first read it. Serious pollution in the largest inland body of water in a most populated state-California. The pictures are scary. The reality is shocking. Click on the link below to see more pictures, read the rest of the story.

The Salton Sea is the largest inland body of water in California, and easily its most toxic. Once a haven for tourists, fishermen and boaters — in the 1950s it was touted as “the American Riviera” — years of polluted runoff from agricultural and industrial sites, not to mention untold amounts of untreated sewage from Mexico, pumped into the sea via one of America’s dirtiest waterways, the Northward-flowing New River, have turned the Salton into a truly foul place.
~
At one time the Salton Sea was among the state’s most productive fisheries. (During WWII, when German submarines made ocean fishing dangerous, most of Southern California’s fish were harvested in the Salton.) But steadily increasing levels of toxins, algae, salt and bacteria led to a number of massive die-offs — the largest, in 1999, killed 7.6 million fish — and its once-thriving population of migratory birds are sickened each year with selenium and botulism poisoning. The Sea is 25% saltier than the ocean and getting saltier every year, and despite some residents’ claims that its tea-colored waters can “heal your skin,” coming into contact with the Salton or eating anything that comes out of it are heartily discouraged.
