Sunday Morning
A Hummingbird Spoke To Me One Day
Years ago, one summer
I came upon a little hummingbird,
no bigger than my thumb.
As it fluttered about a flower
in search of sweet nectar,
I stood, frozen in time, and
was mesmerized by its grace.
I'm not sure why,
or what compelled me,
but I ran inside
to get my brother's BB gun.
As I raced back to my prey,
I did not think
of my actions, or
of consequences, or
regret.
But only of the thought,
"I wonder if I can get it with one shot?"
At that moment, it turned to me
as if to say,
"What a beautiful creature.
so full of life, and
love, and
compassion.
It is a wonderful day to be
alive!"
But I did not listen.
Instead, intent on my mission,
I aimed, and
pulled the trigger.
And in one thoughtless moment,
a tiny lifeless body lay before
me.
I am now thirty- eight years old.
And since that summer of my youth,
A thousand memories and regrets
I have.
And one that haunts me still
is a small one.
If only . . . I had listened with my heart.

Guess Who's Writing a Book?
Condoleezza Rice's first book from her two-tome deal with Crown will focus not on her years at the Bush White House, but rather on her "childhood in Birmingham, Ala., in the 1950s and ’60s against the backdrop of the civil rights movement," the Times reports. It will focus on her role models, including her family. "

Voices Heard This Past Week
Reaction to Justice Alito mouthing "not true" at the State of the Union speech by President Obama was for a temporary time put in the same category as old Mr Wilson when he yelled "You Lie". Here are a few comments I copied from various blogs who carried the news that Alito did, in fact, mouth those words and a YouTube shows you really have to look carefully to see his lips form the words. It's controversial because the Supremes are usually stone faced and take no position at the SOTU. They never even applaud. Alito broke the ice.
attaturk
Alito has now spoken more in the House Chamber than Clarence Thomas has in the Supreme Court.
Of course, the post-speech reaction of Chris Matthews, is always a “special” uh, thing, he claimed to have liked the speech so much that for at least an hour, he almost forgot Obama was a black guy. Tell you what Chris, next year he’ll enter the House Chamber with the musical accompaniment of “Sweet Georgia Brown” to help you out.
Interesting about Alito not being able to control himself. It's a good thing Scalia and Thomas weren't there. Scalia would have screamed, "Liar!" so loudly it would have jolted Thomas awake.
Dula
The 5 Justices who ruled in favor of corporate contol of our elections are lucky they aren't being hung on national TV for treason. We are now officially a Fascist State. Our little experiment in representative Democracy is over...and you're worried about embarrassing them during the SOTU? Pathetic.Daily kos
“the behavior of Justice Alito at last night's State of the Union address -- visibly shaking his head and mouthing the words 'not true' when Obama warned of the dangers of the Court's Citizens United ruling -- was a serious and substantive breach of protocol that reflects very poorly on Alito and only further undermines the credibility of the Court. It has nothing to do with etiquette and everything to do with the Court's ability to adhere to its intended function."
T G I F
Looks like I found a TGIF Pirate. I love Pirates. But this one is probably telling us that the wind, rain and stormy weather is going to be with us again this weekend. She's probably right. This has been an unusual winter. But it won't stop most of us from exercising, getting a little shopping done, planning and preparing a favorite meal for Sunday dinner. Make it a good one!
Home Sweet Home
Everything seems to flow nicely in this room. A breezy feeling, even the bed is inviting. I love the wood planking floors. Nice that the owner can keep the floors clean, even under the bed. The colors are pleasant too.

" . . . And It's Off to Work We Go"
Well, I dunno. These guys look a bit young to be heading out the door for a long days work but the one in the lower photo looks like he can handle it. He should ask his Mom for some clothes though, before actually punching the time clock this morning. I think that would help. But whatever . . . if it's time again to hit the streets and put in another long week at the usual grindstone, be happy you have something to grind. Our unemployment numbers are still too high here in Brevard County Florida where I live. Make it a good week!
Sitting By the Dock of the Bay
This image has a nice Florida feel to it. We see people outdoors enjoying the wilderness down here all the time. Today it's raining so you wouldn't see people out and about. It's a nice photo whoever took it.
This Bothers Me
Waterboarding really doesn't look like waterboarding. Looks more like the opposite. Someone trying to save the young GI's life. Scary!

Sunday Morning
A Formula
There is no easy formula
for determining the right or wrong
for determining the right or wrong
livelihood, but it is essential to keep the question alive.
We have to stop pretending that we can make a living at
something that is trivial or destructive and still have a
sense of legitimate self-worth. A society in which vocation
and job are separated for most people gradually creates an
economy that is often devoid of spirit, one that frequently
fills our pocketbooks at the cost of emptying our souls.
